Dickie

Background

We think that Dickie was a domestic kitten who became a stray and ended up joining a colony of feral and semi-feral cats.

We kept seeing him around a field in Swanley where Anim-Mates had rented a shed was used as shelter and a feeding station for the colony.

Dickie never appeared when we put the food out, but was seen from a distance to come forward when everyone had left the field.

Along with all his mates we eventually managed to trap Dickie and took him to the vets where he was neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Before we were able to return Dickie to his habitat the vet saw a problem with one of Dickie’s eyes and diagnosed a tumour. The vet advised that the eye should be removed to arrest the tumour and leave Dickie painfree. After his operation Dickie rejoined his colony.

Present situation

When his fosterer and all her animals moved in 2009 to a peaceful country setting in St Mary Hoo, Kent, this feral colony were trapped and moved there too.

Like the rest of the colony Dickie took the change in his stride and he now lives in a feed barn.

Far from being shy of humans Dickie now goes to greet everyone as they approach his fosterer’s house.

Future

Dickie is in the Anim-Mates Care for Life scheme and will be spending the rest of his life with us.
