Freddie

A semi feral cat in the care of Anim-Mates was mysteriously injured.

A dog walker found Freddie lying seriously wounded in woodland near the Swanley farmyard where he lives with other semi feral cats. She rushed him to St Paul’s Cray where vet Kate Arrowsmith did everything to save him.

Kate had to amputate Freddie’s back leg and then deal with a major loss of skin from his lower back. “It looked like some sort of burn,” says Teresa Bloomfield of Anim-Mates “It is still is a complete mystery how Fred sustained such horrific injuries.”

As Freddie’s lower back was just raw flesh, the vet had to use a special dressing that she stitched on to act as skin.

“Kate is amazed at his own healing powers - and we are amazed at her skill and determination to save lovely Freddie,” admits Teresa.

Freddie  slowly recovered at Teresa’s home where he was on strict cage rest. He returned to the vet twice a week to have his dressing changed.  When he was fully recovered Freddie was returned to the farmyard.

Re-homing is only one part of Anim-Mates work. Teresa explains: “We take on any animal regardless of age, infirmity or care needs. If they are not suitable for re-homing we commit to them for the rest of their life. Our ‘care for life’ animals live in the homes of fosterers where they are and loved and cared for as their own pets."
